Summitt Elementary School Reviews

While the parent involvement was high - the teachers we had seemd to only worry about the children getting 'just enough' to get them to the next grade. Nothing to challenge the children which was very disappointing.

This is an amazing school. I always belived that parent involvement makes or breaks a school and these parents are really involved! My kids are reallly happy too!

I love the sense of community this school has. I feel like I can take an active role in my childs education and not just a fund raising oppourtunity. My daughter comes home excited about what she has learned and we have been so proud of the sense of personal responsibility the school has fostered in her.

My child is happy at Summitt and his teachers have been great. He does very well in school. However, I really dislike the principal.

I have two daughters who both started in Kindergarten. One is in 1st grade and the other is in 3rd grade. We have been extremely satisfied with all of the teachers and the overal quality of the school.

My son just finished his first year at Summitt. He had a fantastic 1st grade teacher. She communicated with us very effectively and responded well to his needs. She was very open about letting parents help in the classroom. He enjoyed the music, art, and PE 'specials.' The library and librarian is wonderful! It has been a very supportive environment.

So far we have been very happy at Summitt. The staff and faculty really care about the children, and there is a tremendous amount of parental involvement.

Summitt has been a big disappointment. Communication with the parents isn't consistent, phone calls from the principal, counselor, etc. are sometimes never returned or days afterwards. Good luck here if your child isn't an A low maintenance child -

The TAKS drills are a waste of time for Gifted kids that should be doing something more challenging.

Very good academically. Pleased with all my children have learned while attending. Parent involvement is both encouraged as well as greatly appreciated. Many excellent teachers with many years of experience. I feel my children have received a great start to their education.

Summitt is a terrific school with a very dedicated staff. It is considered by most teachers to be a 'destination school' in AISD, meaning that teachers want to go there and very rarely leave voluntarily to teach elsewhere. I know of several very good teachers who were offered positions at highly desirable schools, but they stayed at Summitt even if it meant changing grade levels. My point is that a happy staff means an enthusiatic staff, and the teachers at Summitt relfect that in their teaching. Another outstanding event Summitt hosts every year is 'Soaring Skyward Day', a day of learning and fun that culminates a school-wide science unit about the principles of flight. There are hot air balloons, helicopters, homemade rockets, kites, and much more. The kids love it, and they learn a lot, too. I am very happy to have my kids at Summitt!

Summitt is the only elementary school in Texas that has a foreign exchange program with an elementary school in Germany. The Summitt-Schenkendorf exchange has been in existance for over ten years. It is a fabulous way for the kids to learn about the larger world community. This program is open to 3rd - 5th grades. Children must write an essay to be accepted and then create a special project for the school when they return. This is an excellent program for gifted and special needs children alike. I can think of no better school for my children.

There are countless opportunities for Parents to participate in the education of their children at Summitt. Many parents volunteer in the classrooms, assisting with reading, math, science etc on a regular basis or chaperoning field trips or assisting with the wide variety of great special events throughout the year. There is a Gifted and Talented program as well as opportunities for students of all levels to 'stretch' their abilities. I do feel that more attention/training could be given to teachers on meeting the needs of students with special needs. However, the teachers and staff I have encountered at Summitt have been thoughtful, creative and receptive educators.

There is no challenge for the brighter students, they are told to help the slower students. In spite of the mild weather in Austin, recess is frequently cancelled and kids spend their time in front of a TV. Every holiday is celebrated with parents competing to buy their kids friends with much too much sugar. There is no attempt to regulate this. Second graders spend the entire month between Thanksgiving and Christmas coloring and other non-academic activities. In the three years my daughter was there, she had only one good teacher and the woman is now retired. Parents, like students are encouraged to work for free but not in any meaningful capacity. They can be lunch monitors (the acoustics in the cafeteria are so terrible that neither students nor staff can stand it in there) or they can staple papers together that no one ever reads.
